The softball team faced Milpitas at home on March 25 and got a taste of playing a tough team in the more challenging De Anza League: They lost 17-1.
Though the team lost by this big margin, some highlights of the game were freshman Samantha Weber’s batting and junior Anaya Shah’s pitching.
In the first inning, Milpitas scored three runs, while Weber knocked in junior Alaina Retamoso for the Falcons’ only run. In the second inning, neither team was able to score.
The third inning saw two runs scored by Milpitas and none by the Falcons. Milpitas went on to score seven runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth. With the score 17-1, the 10-run mercy rule was applied, allowing Milpitas to win in five innings instead of the usual seven.

Most of Milpitas’ runs were the result of strong hitting but also some Falcon errors.
“The game wasn’t what we had hoped, but we still played as hard as we could. Our team made a lot of good contact, especially for our first league game, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement,” sophomore shortstop Jemma Tsang said.
Since then, the Falcons have lost their next three games, though the margin between scores has steadily decreased. Their most recent matchup against Mountain View on April 2 resulted in a 7-3 loss, while they also lost Homestead 7-0 on April 1 and 14-3 to Los Altos on March 27.
“After our loss against Milpitas, our team has definitely seen a lot of improvement in fielding and making plays, and the scores are showing that,” Shah said.
