Prognosis:
After going undefeated in the El Camino league last year and losing to Gilroy in CCS semifinals, the team faces new challenges in the upper De Anza league.
The team lost four key seniors to graduation, and one of the team’s star players, sophomore center fielder Alyssa Tham, injured her knee during practice. The injury means Tham won’t be able to play for the remainder of the season. She’ll continue in an advisory capacity, attending practices while cheering on her teammates at games, in addition to making graphics for the softball Instagram page.
Matt Weber, parent of freshman Samantha Weber and a teacher at Argonaut Elementary School, will join sophomore Jemma Tsang’s father, Nick Tsang, as part of the extended coaching staff. Head coach Greg Spirakis is also joined by assistant coach Todd Osborne after former coach Mike Davey left two years ago.
Looking ahead, the team has been moving players around to fill both Tham’s and the graduated seniors’ gaps, but they’re optimistic about the rest of the season.
The team beat Kennedy on March 11 with a score of 9-2. On March 4, they beat Lynbrook 16-5. The team lost 10-0 to Palo Alto on March 3. On Feb. 27, they defeated Prospect 8-7.
Earlier, the team had two scrimmages against Los Gatos and Leland on Feb. 25 and Feb. 24 respectively — they lost 13-0 against Los Gatos and 6-2 to Leland.
Grappling with losing senior strength and their star player, the team has struggled but remains optimistic about the season.
“I’m really looking forward to playing out the rest of the season with this team and watching everybody continuously grow,” Tsang said.
Their next games will be on March 12 against Soquel and March 16 against Silver Creek.
“Our team has high hopes. We’re definitely gonna fight as hard as we can,” Tsang said.
