On Nov. 4 and 6, six members from the girls’ tennis team played in the elimination style SCVAL tournament after placing second in the league.
Junior Melinda Su and senior Kate Vasquez played No. 2 doubles in the tournament and also lost to Fremont in their second match. All teams but No. 1 doubles, played by seniors Mihika Singh and Viki Toram were disqualified on the first day. Torram and Singh lost the second day of the tournament with a score of 3-6, 6-2 and 11-13 in the tiebreak against Wilcox, placing first in the doubles league tournament but not making it to CCS.
“We’re happy that we made it to the second day and the competition was high but I think we performed well and lost with a very close score,” Singh said.
Sigh noted that more doubles practice before the tournament would have promoted better results.
Before playing the tournament, the girls’ tennis team ended their senior night game with a 4-3 loss against Palo Alto, their biggest competitor in the El Camino League. No. 4 singles sophomore Aishi Prashanth lost 10-8 in the 10-point tiebreak after losing the first set 6-3 and coming back and winning the second set 6-4. Similarly, the No. 2 doubles team, Vasquez and Su, won five straight games in the second set, managing to get the score to 6-5. They lost in a close last game, ending with the score 6-4, 7-5. This final loss of the season left the team with an overall record of 12-2.
“It was definitely disappointing to lose such an important match especially because so many matches were so close,” said Singh, who played No. 2 singles.
Despite barely missing CCS once again, the team is proud of their season and all they have accomplished and are confident they can come back and make it next year.
“Even though the result isn’t what I wanted it to be, I’ve still had so much fun at the end of this season. I especially have enjoyed our final practices and cheering on my teammates for their last matches of the season,” Torram said. “The team grew a lot and I’m happy with this season being my last.”
