Is math — as a whole school subject — green or blue?
This seemingly benign question turns out to be a rather heated one to answer. From serious discussions to full-blown debates, disputes over school subject colors can cause countless arguments among students. Here are some of our thoughts on the matter.
Ryan: singing the math blues
Math is blue. How do you see math as anything other than blue? The color blue is associated with logic and deep thinking, just like math!
English is definitely yellow. It’s just the perfect color for a class like English, where you are expected to be energetic and participate a lot — even if I don’t want to. Also, yellow just doesn’t fit with any other subject for me.
Science is green. Oh my goodness. How could science not be green? Literally half the topics, such as chemical compounds like copper and nickel when they oxidize — oh, and the ENTIRETY of the Plantae kingdom in Biology. In a survey of 100 students at nearby Menlo-Atherton High School, 86% said that science is green.

This pie chart reveals that people generally think science is green.
Ainsley:
Math is green. There is no cause for debate nor a doubt in my mind about this. Quite literally half of my friends in middle school had the exact same math notebook with a green plastic cover and a cardboard backing. Plus, it matches with the green of Mr. Yim’s famous cacti!
The only point Ryan and I can agree on is that English is yellow. This warm, bright color represents the glow of the fire in “Lord of the Flies,” the lights in Leonard Mead’s house in “The Pedestrian” and the radiant morning sun in Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery.” It seems to be an all-around unanimous decision that English is obviously yellow. If you disagree, sorry, you are undoubtedly the outlier here.
Science is cyan. Or should I say, CYAN-ce is cyan. It’s in the name! Though it may be an uncommon opinion, the stars have aligned too perfectly to be ignored when they made the pun. Cyan is also a vibrant blend of blue and green, the top two colors on Ryan’s chart.
History is orange. What better color to represent events of the past than the color of rust?
