The ceramics department, led by teacher Leah Aguayo, is hosting its annual soup supper called the “Souper Bowl.” The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria on Feb. 28 and will fundraise for much needed supplies for the course such as clay and glaze. This will mark the tenth year of the event.
To prepare for the event, the advanced ceramics classes have made 300 handmade porcelain bowls. Students form, trim, sand and glaze the bowls.
The money goes towards much needed supplies for the course such as clay and glaze.
Since Aguayo’s husband is the ceramics teacher at Los Gatos High School, the ceramics students at Los Gatos will help make bowls as well.
“I like the fact that we're the only classes in our district that help each other instead of competing,” Aguayo said.
Per tradition, the soups served will be gluten free vegetable minestrone, chicken noodle, black bean and potato corn chowder.
For a $10 donation to the ceramics program, attendees get a handmade bowl, bread, drink and all the soup they can eat. Aguayo’s lauded Salsa Buena and chips will be at each table. There will be a bowl washing station at the event to wash the bowls before taking them home.
While the students will be making the bowls, parents can also pitch in. Parent volunteers will have a vegetable chopping party on Feb. 28th 8 to 10 a.m. to help prep for the event.
The event will not only raise funds but also instill a sense of community. Aguayo believes that food can bring people together.
“If everyone were to make a pot of soup and share it with someone, the world would be a better place,” Aguayo said.
