Twin brothers Maslin and Pierre Boss just moved to Saratoga from Santa Cruz this fall, and they’re wasting no time creating a positive first impression. They have launched a cookie business called Mazzle Dazzle that releases new batches weekly.
Their first lineup, available from Sept. 1-Sept. 14, features four flavors: Kinder Bueno, Strawberry Matcha, Dubai Chocolate and Chocolate Ferrero Rocher.
In their partnership, Maslin bakes the cookies while Pierre focuses on marketing by making Instagram posts and advertising the cookies to his classmates.
“My favorite part of the business is the branding, marketing and sales — just trying to convince people to buy our cookies,” Pierre said. “When [we] sell to teachers, they light up when they hear it’s homemade and a young local business. That’s the fun part.”
For Maslin, baking has long been an interest. At Aptos High, which the brothers attended before moving here, Maslin often gave cookies to teachers for free, and their encouragement inspired him to turn his hobby into a business.
Through their cookie business, the twins get a chance to better connect with the SHS community.
“The community of Aptos was the best part; I truly felt involved with the community as the school felt more focused for you to feel like you were at home and to have fun rather than push yourself to succeed,” Maslin said. “Overall Aptos will always feel like my home, but [at SHS,] I feel like I’m building a true sense of belonging. My first month so far has been amazing; socially, every person is incredibly welcoming and supportive.”
Maslin and Pierre said that their goal for the business isn’t profit, as they both have part-time jobs; instead, they simply hope to serve their community. For example, they offer free cookies if customers repost their Instagram account @mazzledazzle.cookies on their Instagram story.
“Since we run on thin profit margins, most of the money they earn goes right back into buying ingredients,” Maslin said.
Pierre added: “We do it for the love of the game. It’s honestly just fun, and a lot of people can’t say they ran a cookie business during school.”
In the near future, they hope to host free cookie events and introduce new flavors, including a fall special of pumpkin spice cookies.
The twins look forward to baking for cookie events like “Cookies for Kindness” or an Earth Day cleanup where volunteers can get free cookies. They don’t have any plans of branching Mazzle Dazzle into a physical bakery; their main goal is to simply support their community.
“My favorite part of the business is just being able to do what I love and giving out to people,” Maslin said.
