Every time Valentine’s Day rolls around, you typically see people receiving flowers and chocolates, whether it’s at the front door or in the school halls. Love is in the air.
For those who don’t have a special someone, this day can feel especially depressing. But Don’t worry! If you’re alone this Feb. 14 and still want to cherish this day, here are some ideas that will make this day just as fulfilling.
Celebrate Galentine’s
Valentine’s Day doesn’t strictly have to be about romantic relationships, contrary to what you might see around. Hosting a food board night is an exciting way to bring your closest friends together while enjoying delicious food paired with a night of games, movies and deep conversations. Everyone brings a board arranged with a food theme — one example being the traditional charcuterie board, but can expand to other creative themes such as a candy board filled with an assortment of sweets, a french fries and dips board or a Wingstop board.
If you want to do more than just eat, it’s best to make food from scratch. Gather your friends together in the kitchen and make personalized heart-shaped pizzas or cookies. Put as many pieces of pepperoni or sprinkles as you want to show your love. Be aware, attempting to cook with your friends may likely end in ugly, burnt cookies and a disastrous mess, but it will be an unforgettable experience.
If you’re feeling artsy, try hosting a cozy painting session at home to make some keepsakes for Valentine’s Day. Paint something to gift to your friends and family or make a collaborative painting that combines everyone’s personalities and artistic abilities.
Alternatively, you can make jewelry or keychains together. Gather some charms and get to decorating bracelets and necklaces! There’s something about adding your own charms that makes the item 10 times more special. Keychains are also cute accessories you can make that can go on your backpack, purse or even phone case. Whether it’s matching bracelets or matching keychains, it’s a cute item to always remember your friends and this Valentine’s Day.
If you’re feeling too lazy to craft or cook, you may just need a day to relax and forget about your lacking love life. Having a spa day with your friends can be the perfect way to destress and let go of your unrequited crush of three years. As you do facials together and give each other back massages, you might as well start brainstorming ways to spend next year’s Valentine’s Day with an actual Valentine.
Do some self-care
If you don’t feel like socializing and would rather curl up into a ball at home, have a self-care night. After all, Valentine’s Day is a day of love and loving yourself is ultimately the most important. Eat your favorite snacks and binge your favorite shows. Take an “everything shower” with fragrant candles, body scrubs and hair masks and then sink into bed with a comforting book or TV show — you don’t have to worry about making the night fun for anyone else but yourself!
If you enjoy binging things, why not have a movie marathon? Snuggle into bed with your favorite snacks and watch rom-com movies like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” or “The Proposal.” Classic Disney movies like “Tangled” are also great options to unwind by yourself.
If all these anti-romantic activities still don’t satisfy you, there’s one more option to ensure you have an eventful Valentine’s Day: Make the first move and shoot your shot on Valentine’s Day. Be brave and ask that special someone out.
After all, I’m sure you’ve had enough of staying in your room alone for the 16th year, with nobody gifting you chocolates and flowers or sending you a cute text.
Make this year the Valentine’s Day you’ll remember.
