Despite Christmas overtaking Costco in late October, we found a few interesting Halloween items in the aisles.
The first thing that caught our eye were bushels of pumpkins so full they looked like they were ready to spill out. Priced at only $9 per heirloom pumpkin and $8 per jumbo pumpkin, there was little variety to choose from — we’ll probably try a pumpkin patch next time.
Fortunately for us, Costco didn’t disappoint in delivering the highlights of any holiday — candy and snacks, of course. The store offered some classic party snacks with a Halloween twist, including trick-or-treat-sized Welch’s fruit gummies (with pumpkin-, skull-, witch-, castle-, bat- and ghost-shaped gummies), Oreos with pumpkin-colored cream and zombie-green-colored habanero Takis.
Xochitl Totopos de Maiz, which are Mexican-style orange and black corn chips, are also a great choice to set out on coffee tables along with a Halloween edition of Popcornopolis gourmet popcorn. Though we personally don’t care much for mini cheese balls, the Bats & Jacks pretzels are a must-get.
And of course, the 30-pack of full-size chocolate bars, which has a mix of milk chocolate Hershey’s, double-almond Hershey’s, Reese’s and KitKat bars is a Cosco classic. But their most appealing product was the autumn assortment of Ghirardelli chocolate at $11.99 for 18.8 ounces, featuring milk chocolate caramel apple, dark chocolate sea salt caramel, milk chocolate caramel and 60% dark chocolate. Whether you’re throwing a party or looking to stock up on some comfort food, Costco is the place to go.
Though Halloween technically isn’t the holiday of gift-giving, there are still a few toys to choose from, including gravedigging-themed Monster Jam RC cars and Little People collectible figurines featuring characters from “Harry Potter” and “Wednesday.”
Hidden away between the snacks and the clothing sections, the mountain of books keeps shrinking every year (sadly), but we loved revisiting some of the childhood picture books — remember those zombie-carrots that came alive and tried to haunt the poor rabbit? It might be worth rereading “Creepy Carrots” by Aaron Reynolds and Peter Brown. And we would’ve gotten the 4-pack of Katherine Applegate classics if we didn’t already have half the books — you can curl up and devour any of these books in a few hours, which will fly by faster than you think. If you’re into the mysterious, supernatural exchanges happening in the worlds of talking trees and cats’ imaginary friends, be sure to check out this series!
If you want to go all out, one of these giant Squishmallows is the best option! This is probably the cutest colorful zombie you’ll ever see — don’t miss out on this one.
Sadly, Costco’s costume selection was a letdown, featuring just three options. Unless you’re a 10-year-old who is super enthusiastic about being either Spiderman, Sonic the Hedgehog or Pikachu, you’ll probably be disappointed.
Although the store’s Halloween selection is limited, Costco’s superior snacks make it worth a trip. After all, it’s pretty hard to go wrong with candies and treats.
