Record number of students danced the night away at Winter Ball

On Dec. 11, students danced the night away in the large at this year’s winter ball themed “La vie en rose” in support of a breast cancer organization.

Despite low attendance rates in previous years, this year’s winter ball had the highest attendance ever with about 400 students, assistant principal Karen Hyde said.

“Attendance was astounding. I never expected that many people would show up! I was definitely very excited,” ASB vice president Nina Mohanty said.

Mohanty and ASB president David Mandell were in charge of organizing the winter ball, along with the rest of the ASB officers. Mohanty came up with the idea of donating some of the profits to a breast cancer charity and thus making the theme “La Vie en Rose,” or the life in pink.

“I think people were really supportive about the whole donating concept,” Mohanty said. “Students seemed ok with paying a little extra because it was going to a worthy charity.”

Hyde also agreed that though bid prices were a bit high, starting at $25 with ASB the first week, the idea of donating to a charity added to the overall aura of the event.

“There was a concern that the cost of bids was too high,” Hyde said. “However, kids liked the DJ, the decorations and the theme—particularly since we gave money [to a charity].”

ASB officers agreed that there were no major problems, and Hyde said that her only concern was having to intervene again when some students were dancing inappropriately.

Many students agreed that the DJ was particularly good and helped add to the enjoyable night.

“I thought the DJ was awesome,” junior Rebecca Smerdon said. “He played really current music and listened to our requests. I think ASB did a great job this year.”

Mohanty said she began planning early to get everything done, and Hyde and Mandell both agreed that Mohanty was the driving force behind winter ball.

“I’m really proud to say that it was sponsored by the ASB,” Mohanty said. “I think it was an excellent reflection of this year’s ASB and I’m really happy about how things went.”

Student feedback also positively reinforced Mohanty’s thoughts on the event.

“Winter formal was fantastic this year,” sophomore Amin Mirzadegan said. “Everything seemed to go smoothly, and I had a great time.”
