Badminton team faces coaching changes

February 5, 2015 — by Spring Ma and Eileen Toh

The badminton team prepares for the upcoming season.

Coach: Charley Situ

2013-2014 Record/Season Recap: The Falcons placed fifth out of seven schools in league play with a 5-7 record. Out of three CCS players, none placed.
League: SCVAL De Anza A League

Star Players: Seniors Max Chang, Kevin Lian and Junna Shimokawa, junior Michael Owyang and sophomore Josh Li

Key Additions: Freshman Stephen Ding

Key Matchups: Lynbrook (March 26), Monta Vista (April 21)

Key Losses to graduation: Bryan Chow and Evans Ding

Prognosis:

After the loss of both the assistant and head coach, as well as 2014 alumni, the team must rebuild its line-up this season. Aside from their returning players, the Falcons also anticipate the addition of freshman Stephen Ding (ranked eighth in the nation in U17 Boys Singles) to the team. With new coach Charley Situ, who previously coached the league’s No. 1 team, Monta Vista, the team hopes to improve its unity and work on each player’s strengths.

“This season is going to be interesting, especially because we have a new coach and new players,” sophomore Megan Fung said. “We just have to keep working harder with the new line-up to get to where we want to be.”
