The PTSO is funding a talk to inform parents about the college application process. This seminar will take place on Oct. 9 in the cafeteria.
The speaker for this workshop is Dr. Jerry Shapiro, a professor of counseling psychology at Santa Clara University. Shapiro has appeared on Oprah, CNN, CBS News and Morning Shows. He speaks regularly to parent groups on a variety of topics including college preparation.
According to co-organizer Dory Albert, the talk is aimed to “help parents let students find the right college fit.”
“Dr. Shapiro provides a workshop and a presentation that will help maximize a student’s chances of getting into the right college, and look at future careers,” Albert said.
The PTSO is organizing this event to help parents deal with the realities of the college process, not the myths. Albert said that too often students listen to rumors and outdated information.
The talk aims to help students avoid these traps and inform parents about the entire process.
“Thinking the only way to succeed in high school is by overloading on AP and Honors classes only for the grade ‘bump,’ signing up for every club or sport and getting little sleep, leads to an unhealthy, unhappy and misinformed family and student,” Albert said.
Albert added:“I hope parents will walk away from this talk with a sense of relief that there are many colleges and many opportunities awaiting each and every student,” Albert said.
