OSCARS
The Oscars is not only one of the biggest nights in film, but also in fashion. Hollywood's elite hit the red carpet once again at the Dolby Theatre on Feb. 24 wearing the top designers in the fashion industry, and the fashions did not disappoint.
From old Hollywood style and dramatic dresses to pale colors and glittery ensembles, A-listers showed off the hottest trends while vying to land a spot on the coveted best-dressed list.
Pale shades certainly dominated the red carpet, with Amy Adams, Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron all clad in muted pinks and beiges. Yet it was Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence's strapless light-pink Dior gown, complete with a gold necklace draped down her back, that turned the most heads.
However, it’s not a signature Oscars red carpet event without a few fashion disasters, and Sunday’s show had several. Among them was “Les Miserables” star Amanda Seyfried’s ensemble.
Her off-white Alexander McQueen gown featured a choker and a loose-fitting bust line, but was too tight in the back, making the petite actress look heavy. In addition, quirky actress Helena Bonham Carter turned heads in Vivienne Westwood, a mismatched cascade of black, grey and white fabric, topped off with her signature messy hair.
GRAMMY AWARDS
Someone say dress code?
One thing's for sure: there was no dress code at all on the Grammys red carpet on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.
Unlike the Golden Globes and the Oscars, the Grammys red carpet has always been a place where an alternative expression of glamor is welcomed.
Highlights include Florence Welch, a fashion fan favorite, who wore a custom green sequined Givenchy gown. Her monochromatic look was complete with a matching box clutch and shoes also from Givenchy. Rihanna was the lady in red, wearing a fairly minimalist A-line custom Azzedine Alaia gown.
Sometimes a printed gown can be gorgeous, but that wasn’t often the case at the 2013 Grammys. So many stars missed the mark in prints, including the flashy Estelle (her loud mermaid gown wasn’t especially flattering). Kimbra looked like she was wearing a flamboyant dancing costume — the dress had way too much going on. She certainly stood out, but for all the wrong reasons.
Overall, the looks that lined the Grammy Awards red carpet weren't too outrageous or ostentatious like the previous year's fashions, nor were they particularly memorable. However, they were loud, lovely and lustrous.
The 55th Annual Grammy Awards came with some much-mocked dress code restrictions. Nevertheless, celebrities came dressed to impress. In fact, there was a bit of a rebellion going on, considering all the skin that was showing, especially the “Leg Out” trend.
