Hundreds of students gathered around the stairs of the quad anticipating an exciting performance by the seniors during their quad day on Oct. 3 at lunch. Onlookers came away impressed with the seniors’ presentation of their theme “Cairo,” which included Egyptian music, dancing and costumes.
Seniors dressed as pharaohs, mummies and Cleopatras. The mummies had toilet paper wrapped around them. Cleopatras wore black wigs, scarves and jewelry.
Said junior Emilie Dox, “I thought that they did a really good job with their costumes because they were very intricate and had many details on the outfit.”
The seniors had a skit written by Rahul Thakker where they mocked underclassmens’ quad day. Seniors Sandeep Chandrasekhar, Chris Rhea, Nathan Nguyen and Jason Huang played a gangster, roman, Pikachu and Ash Ketchum, respectively.
“It was pretty good and it seems like they put a lot of hard effort into preparing their skit. It kept the audience laughing since it mocked other grades,” said junior Samantha Tseng.
The senior class had about 70 participants and performed eight dances, from belly dancing to breakdancing. They managed to incorporate Egyptian moves into all dances.
There was an all-guys performance that had an Aladdin-inspired tone to it. The boys all wore purple vests, moccasins and sweat pants. The dance was especially popular among the girls since the boys ripped off their vests.
Although people thought that it was a great show, some thought that the next dance was even better. Seniors wearing football jerseys had their own dance solos.
Another popular routine was a mummy breakdance. It showed off the dancers’ skills and was based on America’s Best Dance Crew’s Kaba Modern.
“It was really cool how they crawled onto the stage and they were really good at breakdancing,” said freshman Sarah Lum.
It took a lot of time for the seniors to pull off this quad day. They met and practiced for a total of 20 hours.
Senior Lewis Chen, who coordinated the dances, said, “The only problem was that it was hard to get everyone to meet up together at one place but we were able to pull it of.”
Tseng said that the expectations for seniors are always high and people expect them to put on the best performance.
Said senior Tim Tsai, “Overall, I am satisfied with our performance since we put in so much hard work and time into the quad day. I am proud of how well we did.”
