With a solid group of freshmen who have had great success filling the roles of last year’s seniors, the boys’ cross country team found success this season along with great results at CCS and a berth in state competition.
“We were kind of worried about this year in the beginning because we had lost seniors like Kyle Fukui and Garrick Chan,” sophomore Will Guy said. “But now with [freshman] Komdean Masoumi, Andrew Harter and Stevie Sum showing up we are probably going to go far.”
At CCS, the Falcons soared with five members placing in the top 50 out of 93 runners. Sum placed second, and Sam Guy placed 12th.
Guy believes that the team only has room to improve since its top five runners are underclassmen.
“The freshmen have all shown a lot of promise this year,” said Guy. “They are all young and haven’t fully developed yet so they have a lot of room to improve.”
Sum, Masoumi and Harter have been huge assets, placing in the top 10 for the League meet. Placing in the top 20 in each of this season’s races, sophomore Sam Guy has shown promise. Sum placed first in races that included the Lynbrook, Saratoga, and Crystal Springs.
“Stevie has been awesome this year,” Guy said. “It’s almost like he is in his own race during each meet.”
No seniors had a position on varsity, but showed great leadership on the team.
“We are losing Erin Verzigolu next year who was a captain, as well as Peter An, so those two will be missed,” junior David Zarrin said.
