High hopes entering Crystal Spring League race on Nov. 3 ended in disappointment for the boys’ cross country team, who placed last by nine points.
“The race for varsity was bad because it was hot and windy,” said senior varsity runner Simon Steinfeld. “Two of our top 7 ran in the varsity race. For CCS we want to qualify for states. That’s our goal.”
Contrary to the unfavorable results at Crystal Springs, the Oct. 27 Lynbrook race was a significant team victory. The flat 2.06 mile consisted of cement and dirt track with additional small and large loops.
Junior David Zarrin placed first in the Varsity B race, which also consisted of sophomores and freshmen. Zarrin finished in 11:15 at 5:28-mile pace.
Results from the Varsity A race, consisting of seniors and juniors, were not as impressive. Key senior Peter An wasn’t able to finish the last 600 meters of the course due to an leg injury sustained during a fall.
The new flat 2.1 mile course around a nearby park that was made for a very fast paced run.
“There was a lot less grass, which contributed to increased speed. There were also a lot fewer annoying sharp turns like in the Lynbrook course,” junior co-captain Kabir Chandrasekher said.
Results from the Oct. 20 Baylands meet also showed great promise for the team. Freshman Steven Sum finished the 3.1 mile course in 16:23, placing fifth out of 87 runners. Not too far behind was sophomore Sam Guy, who finished in 17:37 and placed 23rd.
“We want to make it to states and I know we have a really good chance,” said Chandrasehker.
