Although the turnout for the April 2 Sadie Hawkins dance was low, the estimated 150 students who went were able to make the most of it.

“I think there weren’t a lot of people because the dance happened right after Decades Dance and right before junior prom,” junior Kylie Tseng said.

The last informal dance of the year, the dance was held on Saturday from 8-11 p.m. in the Small Gym. The theme was “When I Grow Up,” which gave students plenty of creative options for the one dance all year that girls traditionally ask guys to.

“I really liked the theme this year because it left students with such a broad range costume ideas,” Tseng said. “It felt like Halloween because everyone was so dressed up.”

Along with lasers and blacklights, DJ Verona (senior Angel Hernandez) and DJ Dionysus (senior Peter Auvil) were hired to play music at the dance.

“I did not do as well as I had wanted to,” Hernandez said. “I was not very prepared so we had to change up the flow, but overall, I felt people were satisfied.”

Because of this, Auvil took over for the majority of the dance.

“It went pretty well,” Auvil said. “But towards the end there was some speaker trouble, so people were complaining that the speakers were popping so the audio quality went down. We did put the set list up on Facebook so people seemed to be happy with the choices, and we made and we got pretty positive feedback.”

The school announced before the dance that the administration would be randomly breathalyzing students. This kept the dance issue-free, since students opted to have a clean, alcohol-free night.

“Only in Saratoga would kids come up to me and ask to be breathalized and play with it,” assistant principal Karen Hyde said.

The low attendance did not detract from the overall experience of the dance, which ran smoothly, according to Hyde.

“Even though the music deteriorated by the end of the dance, it was fun dressing up and being with my friends,” Tseng said.
