Director Martin Scorsese once remarked that big blockbuster films often lack the artistic value of true cinema. Movies like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 aim more to entertain than to tell deep stories. So, does this new Sonic movie hit the mark, or is it just another forgettable attempt to make money?
I was eager to see Sonic the Hedgehog 3, hoping it would be as enjoyable as the first two films. With hints of new characters and action-packed scenes promised, it seemed like a recipe for fun. While the movie certainly delivers on energy and excitement, it misses the charm and emotional depth that made the earlier movies stand out.
The film brings back Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles as they confront a new adversary: Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow brings a serious and mysterious vibe that initially adds excitement. However, instead of focusing on his story, the movie shifts to a complicated plot involving government secrets and typical villain antics, taking away from what could have been a more engaging rivalry between Sonic and Shadow.
A major issue is the story’s pacing. The first two Sonic movies managed to balance humor, action, and heartfelt moments, but this one feels rushed and overcrowded. Characters like Tom and Maddie, who used to provide humor and heart, get little screen time because the plot tries to cover too many elements at once without fully exploring them. Even Knuckles, who was a standout character in the second movie, is mostly reduced to predictable jokes.
Visually, the movie is impressive. The action scenes are fast and colorful, capturing the essence of the Sonic games. The voice actors, especially Ben Schwartz as Sonic, bring a lot of energy to their roles. However, strong performances and stunning visuals can’t compensate for the messy story and lack of emotional depth.
That doesn’t mean the movie is all bad. If you’re looking for fast-paced fun and references to the original games, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 delivers. Longtime fans will be thrilled by Shadow’s appearance, and there are moments that bring the game’s world to life. However, when compared to the earlier movies, this one falls short.
In the end, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is entertaining but not memorable. It includes all the expected elements—iconic characters, high-energy action, and humor—but without a strong emotional story, it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. Fans will enjoy it, but it doesn’t fully reach its potential.
