Mariah Carey has been a Christmas music mogul for years, but her reign can only last so long. For me, her high notes have become a headache that lasts all through the holiday season, often starting earlier than Thanksgiving day. Her single “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is easily the most mind-numbing Christmas song, while being replayed — unfortunately — without end. To make this Christmas hit the right note, try listening to some of my recommendations instead.
Gayla Peevey (the original) sang this song in 1953 at the young age of 10. This song has remained a Christmas classic for years and her youthful voice contributes to the message of the song by showcasing the attachment children have to the Christmas season and Santa.
- “White Christmas” (1947)
Bing Crosby’s original song is a classic for when you decide to step into the Christmas mood, while The Philly’s Special rendition adds a jazz-pop touch to Crosby’s classic.
- “Underneath The Tree” (2013)
Kelly Clarkson has always been an underrated artist, and her Christmas music is no different. “Underneath The Tree” easily tops Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and creates the Christmas spirit without hurting my eardrums with unnecessary high notes.
- “Rockin Around The Christmas Tree” (1958)
Brenda Lee is another Christmas staple artist who deserves all the praise for her song. Her unique vocal tone stands out among other renditions, and her lyrics embody the Christmas spirit.
- “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” (1962)
Darlene Love makes Christmas music that can be listened to all-year-round. Despite my adamant dislike for people who play Christmas songs in the summer, I can make an exception for her. The multiple covers by artists like U2, Cher and Michael Bublé do justice to this song as well.
- “Last Christmas” (1984)
This song by Wham! is the perfect pop song to get into the mood for Christmas hype — and the acclaim is well deserved. The addictive melody and unique tone has this song replayed everywhere during the holiday season. This is a Christmas classic that I won’t be giving away anytime soon.
All these songs bring a little extra kick to the holiday season and are Marish Carey-free. Next time all you want for Christmas is better music, add these songs to your holiday playlist.
