Tensions rise especially during Homecoming week as each grade tries to top the other. But we all know that the seniors’ decorations will be the best and should be the best.
Being an intrepid Falcon reporter, I went to the seniors’ Homecoming decorations to see what would happen if I just started to help. I, being a junior, expected to be shunned or immediately kicked out while the seniors threw cardboard flowers at me. But thankfully, neither was the case.
When I first walked up to the garage, a group of seniors were cutting out clouds with X-acto knives and a dozen of them were painting flowers and butterflies. Only a few people stared at me, but they continued to cut or paint. The only two instances in which I had to explain why I was there were not as daunting a task as I previously imagined it to be.
While I was trying to keep them from finding out that this was an experiment, I felt as if everyone already knew.
Although my intentions were far from sabotage, I could feel the eyes of different people staring at me and talking about me. I found it pretty funny that two girls talked about me while being about two feet away from where I was sitting.
“Wait, why is she here?”
“I don’t know…who is she?”
“Is she a senior? No, I know she’s not.”
“Go talk to her!”
“No! I don’t want to…whatever it’s fine.”
I pretended I wasn’t listening to them as they tried to keep their voices low. I guess they decided one random person working on a small piece of their decoration wasn’t significant, so they ignored me.
I came to the conclusion that nobody will care as long as the “trespasser” has a legitimate reason to be there. In my case, I let only a few people know that I was there for a story. But if a random junior or underclassman stopped by to help, I think people would notice and question their existence.
Still, entering the seniors’ Homecoming-building area as a non-senior is an overall silly idea. I found it was almost impossible to have a good reason for being there. My advice: Stick to your own building Homecoming decorations for your own class.
