These past few weeks have been tough for the Falcons. Facing loss after loss, the team that once stood with a perfect record at the start of the preseason has crumbled as the weeks have progressed. Their current league record is 1-5.
The Falcons fell short against Wilcox High School on April 21 with a final score of 1-11. Due to the absences of two key players, sophomore pitcher Rachel Davey and junior pitcher Stephanie Hayes, the team ended the afternoon in disappointment.
“We didn't hit very well and had some errors in the field,” said sophomore center fielder Natasha Ramakrishnan. “I had a couple catches in centerfield but other than that we just had a bad game.”
The Falcons also lost 2-1 to Los Altos High School on April 14 in what first baseman junior Savannah Green said was the most significant game of the week.
Despite the loss, Green is still proud of the team’s efforts. She said the Falcons were able to get on base, but unable to make enough hits to drive in the runners.
“The game was basically a pitching match because there [were] only a couple hits,” Ramakrishnan said .
Nevertheless, Green said the team played well against a challenging opponent.
“We were focused the entire time and did well against the number one pitcher in the league,” Green said.
The team lost to Sobrato in an away game on March 28 and Gunn in a home game on April 17.
A boost in their morale, however, came with a 10-5 win against at home Los Gatos High School on March 31. Spurred by the desire to beat the longtime rival, the team pushed through, scoring brilliantly despite the excellent Los Gatos pitcher.
“When we played LG we knew that there were bragging rights at stake,” Green said. “We were super focused and we ended up winning.”
With CCS approaching quickly, the team hopes to bring home more victories to secure a spot in the championships; to achieve this, it needs to win at least half of its remaining games.
“Our goal for this week is to win every game to put us back in position for CCS,” Green said.
The team played Milipitas on April 28 and Westmont on April 29, but the Falcon could not include the results of these games due to printing deadlines. The team will play Los Altos on May 5 and Gunn on May 7.
