To further promote the sciences among underclassmen, Science Club president senior Robert Eng plans to start Science Olympiad at the school after club day.
Eng believes that Science Olympiad will build an underclassmen foundation to become fully competitive with peripheral schools in the area.
Science Olympiad consists of three categories: written tests, engineering, and other. Within the three categories are 17 subjects, such as physics and forestry.
Since the school restricts the number of AP science classes underclassmen can take, Eng believes that SHS students are at a disadvantage for such competitions against other schools because many schools allow their underclassmen to take AP science and math earlier on in their high school careers.
Eng plans to start Science Bowl in early September. He is looking for about 15 freshmen and sophomores for his team.
Other Olympiads, such as biology, physics and chemistry also exist, but those are all individual competitions and purely based on tests, whereas Science Olympiad is a team effort with greater range of topics and hands-on activities.
Science Olympiad competitions begin in the spring, but Eng hopes to start preparing the team as soon as possible.
