Math Club competes at SCU

Nine students participated in the Santa Clara University High School Mathematics Contest on Nov. 10, the first out-of-school competition so far this year. The contest is a three-hour, non-calculator exam that tests problem solving skills, not directed toward any specific math course.

A total of 233 students in the region participated in the contest, now in its 55th year.

Freshmen Jacky Lee, Dorothy Tang, Sean Shi, Brendan Ney and Nate Ney, juniors Edgar Chen, Priyanka Krishnamurthi and Matthew Lee and senior Edward Dong entered the contest. Six Redwood students also competed.

According to Math Club treasurer Krishnamurti, not as many people attended as the club had anticipated, most likely because of a speech and debate tournament during the same weekend.

“It’s definitely a difficult contest, but we bonded while working on problems,” Krishnamurti said. “After going over the answers with each other, we expect some of us to do well.”

Results of the competition will not be known until next semester.
