The baseball team narrowly lost its season opener 3-2 to Sacred Heart Cathedral on Feb. 24.
Senior pitcher and staff ace Will Dennis was credited with the loss, but kept the team within striking distance in a 5 inning quality start.
Even with Dennis’s strong pitching outing, the team could not overcome a lackluster offensive effort, collecting just three hits by senior shortstop Brady Horn, junior second baseman Trevor Hanks and junior catcher Stevie Berman.
Although the offense sputtered, the coaches liked what they saw from the falcons. A main reason for the optimism was the team’s execution of “small ball” during the game.
“We got down sacrifice bunts and did everything for the team, rather for than for individual stats,” head coach Adam Varteressian said.
Another pleasant surprise was that Dennis filled the shoes of Dillan Pak, the pitching ace of the 2010 and 2011 squads.
“It’s nice to have Will be as dominant as he was. Usually when you hold a team to 3 runs, you come away with the win,” Horn said.
Although the Falcons fell in their opening game, they will play against Fremont, on Mar. 2, and against Lynbrook, on Mar. 3. The Falcons first league game is against Los Altos on Mar. 7.
