Girls’ water polo: Team satisfied with turn-around season

In a turn-around season, the Falcons improved upon last year’s 1-9-0 record, finishing 9-6-0 and in third place in the El Camino League. Players pointed to game performance and team unity as sources of the turn-around.

“We did a lot better than last year,” junior utility Seralyn Fields said. “In all the years that I’ve played, we’ve never gotten this close to going to CCS.”

According to Fields, the turning point of the season came with the Falcons’ victory over Live Oak at a tournament in the middle of the season.

“We had a losing streak for a while that we finally broke in that close game,” Fields said. “We went into overtime against them, and then Mac [freshman driver Mackenzie Rosenthal] went in for the goal. We won all the rest of our [league] games after that.”

Fields says the key to their team’s success next year will be to maintain the level of speed they currently have among the players, and to ensure that all players learn the necessary skills to become important members of the team.

“Besides becoming better at setting up [offense and defense] during games, getting everyone to be on a certain level to be able to play well is going to be important,” Fields said. “We need to boost our weaker players who don’t get to play as much in order to become a better team.”

Fields says the team owes its success this year to the dedication of all the players on the team.

“Everyone’s worked really hard this year,” Fields said. “The effort of the players has been especially important to our success.”
