As the holiday season approaches, there is an annual debate about who the No. 1 Christmas artist is. Is it Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You?”? Is it Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me”? Or even a Christmas carol?
To find out what students and followers thought, the Falcon conducted a poll on our Instagram account, asking “Which of these Christmas artists are your favorite?” Seventy-eight students responded to the survey. Here are the top four vote recipients
- Brenda Lee — “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”: 4 votes
Brenda Lee, known for her mature and powerful voice from a young age, recorded the legendary song “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” in 1958 when she was only 13. Since 1960, the song has frequently appeared on the Billboard Charts, with a resurgence in the 2010s.
- Frank Sinatra — “Let It Snow”: 20 votes
Third on the list came Frank Sinatra, with his masterpiece “Let It Snow” — a song that feels like a cozy jazz blanket for the holidays. He turns a simple winter tune into a jazzy classic with his calm tone and style. Notably, it has made appearances on the Billboard charts multiple times since its original release in the 1950s.
- Mariah Carey — “All I Want For Christmas Is You”: 27 Votes
When people mention their favorite Christmas song, more often than not they say: “All I want for Christmas is you.” The catchy tune is easy and fun to hum along to and has topped the Billboard Chart for 68 cumulative weeks so far. Many people say “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is annoying from overexposure, making people feel it’s unavoidable for Christmas, but the song remains as a classic for the holiday season.
- Wham! — “Last Christmas”: 27 votes
While “All I Want for Christmas is You” is an all-time favorite song, “Last Christmas” by Wham! shares equal popularity among those surveyed, tying as a top seasonal favorite. The universally loved yet underrated song that tops the Billboard chart at the end of every year is, surprisingly, less about a Christmas song and more about a failed relationship.
