From Bruno Mars to Taylor Swift, celebrity look-alikes never fail to create a stir, with their uncanny resemblances sparking whispers in group chats. One example of this trend is the way members of the varsity boys’ volleyball team have joined in on this fun, delighting in the discovery of a team member who bears a striking resemblance to the mischievous protagonist from Bill Watterson’s famous comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes.”
Sophomore Lawrence He is a core member of the team and is a defensive specialist. His resemblance to Calvin was pointed out first by Class of ‘24 alum Kali Duvvuri — in particular, his hairstyle and boyish face mirror Calvin’s most prominent features.
“Growing up, I have never been told that I look like Calvin,” He said. “But no matter how much I deny it, the team won’t let me live it down so I’ve just accepted it at this point. Whatever helps them find more joy in practice.”
Aside from his striking physical resemblance, He also embodies Calvin’s adventurous spirit. He often promptly asks coach Lori Gragnola if he can be a hitter in addition to just passing and playing defense. He also has a knack for stirring up lighthearted mischief in practice — though, thankfully, not the kind that would send him to the principal’s office.
The members of the volleyball team find great joy in having a well-respected character in childhood memories, practicing and playing alongside them during the school season.
“Lawrence has this youthful energy that’s contagious. He brings a really good vibe to the team and a lot of energy during games,” sophomore middle blocker Ahmed Abdalla said. “It’s also fun to taunt him about his look-alike.”
Whether he’s spiking a ball or cracking jokes in practice, He brings a dose of comic-strip charm to the school halls. Next time you see a spiky-banged volleyball player during the game, take a closer look and you might see Hobbes on his shoulder as well.
