Three blank canvases. A banana taped to a wall. A stack of buckets of sand. These random assortments of objects have become critically acclaimed modern art, each sold for thousands of dollars.
Sure, modern art isn’t all bad. Some pieces are genuinely thought-provoking and can carry a lot of meaning. But some like the banana go too far. When did we lose our standards? The amount of effort and time an artist puts into some of today’s modern art is a far cry from the months or even years artists in the 17th or 18th century spent creating their oil paintings, sculptures or tapestries. Today, artists who put effort into their work are overshadowed by the sheer volume of random modern art we put into our museums. The solution: As consumers, we need to do better to support the artists who pour their hearts into their work.
