The softball team’s season ended May 18 with a 7-0 Division II CCS quarterfinal loss to Capuchino.
Going into the match, Capuchino had a 10-4 record in its upper A league season and was No. 2 seed in Division II, whereas the Falcons had a 10-2 B league record and were the No. 7 seed.
“We felt like the underdog for sure but we all went into the game with a good attitude because we realized that we really didn’t have anything to lose,” junior pitcher Saira Ramakrishnan said. “We wanted to make this game as competitive and enjoyable as possible and I think we did that.”
The team struggled against Capuchino’s junior pitcher Lola Sierra, who pitched a one-hitter and threw all seven innings, striking out seven batters.
One of The Falcons’ freshman Alaina Retamoso ended the game with a 0.667 on-base average and a .500 batting average, and was able to hold her own against Sierra’s pitching — getting one hit and two bases.
Compared to Capuchino and their DI Arizona State commit catcher Avery Motroni, the Falcons struggled with fielding, ending with 18 putouts out of 32 chances compared to Capuchino’s 21 putouts out of 32 chances.
Despite playing the same amount of CCS games as in the 2023 season, the team improved their league standing and record from third at 9-3 to second with a 10-2 record.
“This is the best we’ve placed in league since 2017, and I think that’s a huge accomplishment,” Ramakrishnan said. “Even though we won’t get a banner for finishing second, I feel like it definitely helped us get more acknowledgement and it boosted our team’s morale. With regards to the future, I hope we can get more girls out to play. We’re losing 4 seniors that are incredibly important to this team, and so hopefully we can have enough girls that come in that can fill their roles and work hard to win league.”
