The Saratoga Quiz Bowl team will participate in the locally televised “Quiz Kids” competition on Feb. 27. The competition, the team’s first, will be taped on that day and then broadcast at a later time, said club president Vijay Menon.
“We’re really excited about Quiz Kids because it’s our first real tournament,” Menon said.
Both Quiz Bowl and Quiz Kids are trivia competitions where teams answer questions about subjects such as math, science and history.
But doing well requires practice and a wide repertoire of knowledge in everything from calculus to culinary arts, Menon said. Since its inception last year, the club has been working hard to catch up with other more experienced schools.
“Schools like Bellarmine and Mission San Jose have large, established Quiz Bowl clubs,” Menon said. “It’s going to take a lot of hard work to be able to compete with them.”
Although Quiz Bowl is small compared to other clubs at school, it is large nationally, with more than 200 teams across the country. Quiz Kids is an offshoot of Quiz Bowl that is put on by PenTV, an educational television network that broadcasts on KRON-4 and on the Internet.
Traditionally, Quiz Bowl is played in teams of four. Saratoga High’s Quiz Bowl club currently has just one team, but is looking to expand as the club becomes more popular. The current lineup consists of captain junior Vijay Menon, senior Ashwin Siripurapu, Ramesh and sophomore Anoop Galivanche.
“I’m really excited to be on TV,” said junior Navneet Ramesh, who is also on the team.
