Homecoming review: Seniors one-up the competition

During lunch on Oct. 4, seniors gave a memorable Super Mario-themed Quad Day performance in their final high school Homecoming. The skit starred seniors Clark Rothenberg as Mario, Bronwen Bowen as Princess Peach, Anup Kar as Bowser, Jason Li as Toad and Manini Desai as Princess Daisy. 

The story began with Mario and Peach as a married couple going to their 25th high school reunion. There, they reminisce on their high school days when Bowser last stole Peach. Mario then proceeded on a quest to rescue the Princess. 

The skit was easy to follow and entertaining. The seniors’ experience in Quad Days was evident as they were comfortable on stage. 

While the skit was impressive, the dances stole the show. The three all-guys’ dances, the two all-girls’ dances and the hip-hop routine all had strong participation and were well choreographed. 

“All of the planning and practices were difficult at times, but in the end it somehow all came together,” said senior Stephanie Tsang, one of the choreographers. “It was so amazing to see the class spirit and the experience was rewarding for everyone.”

Furthermore, the singing performance by seniors Vanessa Wang, Alvin Huang and Sean Su was another highlight to a strong show that culminated in a huge finale. 

The participation this year was another highlight as seniors were active participators in both decorations and Quad Day. The Quad Day finale included 150 to 200 seniors.  

“Working together with everyone in the class and seeing everyone participate was really cool,” Bowen said. “I always enjoy hanging out with people at Homecoming that I don't normally hang out with. I think it's really good for class unity.”

The seniors’ Quad Day and decorations were well planned and executed. 

“I definitely think our class was the best with both Quad Day and decorations,” Tsang said. “Whenever I walked down the halls, it made me smile looking at all of the hard work our class put in for the decorations.”

The experience has taught the class much about teamwork and time management. Trying to plan practices in order accommodate the different schedules and extra-curricular activities was something the seniors can take into the future. 

“I have definitely learned more about how to work with people,” Tsang said. “It was difficult figuring out times to fit everyone’s schedule for practices and getting people to come help with decorations. I will never forget the amazing performance we put on and I couldn’t be any prouder of my class.”

More than anything, this Homecoming will be a great memory for the senior class.

“I loved how our class came together. We all had so much fun getting ready for Quad Day, even [in] early morning practices,” senior class president Jackie Taysi said. “We bonded so much as a class and it's an experience I don't think anyone will ever forget.”
