Top 10: Crayola color names worth critiquing January 21, 2024 — by Florence Wei Graphic by Florence WeiThe golden nugget color is a concerning shade of silver. Crayola colors come in a range of names, most of which are accurate. But these? 10. Razzmatazz Why can’t it just be called raspberry? 9. Purple Pizzazz It’s hot pink. Barely any purple at all. 8. Unmellow Yellow The color’s nice. But because of its lighter shade, Unmellow Yellow seems mellow and just doesn’t stand out. 7. Outrageous Orange What has Orange done that’s so outrageous? It’s a shade that’s easy on the eyes and not “shockingly bad or excessive,” as the Oxford English dictionary says. 6. Pet Shop Ah, yes, the color of a pet shop. Try to picture it in your mind. I certainly can’t. 5. Atomic Tangerine There is no need to bring chemistry and physics into a shade of orange. 4. Shocking Pink I have yet to discover what’s so shocking about this standard pink color. I guess I’ll pretend to be surprised every time I see it. 3. Screamin’ Green This shade of green doesn’t scream at me. Ironically, it does the opposite. It looks like a very mellow spring green. 2. Golden Nugget What do you think when you imagine a gold nugget? Definitely not silver, right? With a name like Golden Nugget, this crayon should definitely not be so dull. 1. Coral Reef It’s yellowish-gray with more gray than yellow. Sad? Yes. But also accurate.
