PS4 wins next-gen console crown

The holiday season sparks the beginning of a two-month period in which the most anticipated video games are released. But this year, the holiday season brings an even more coveted time for gamers.

The competition between the new next-generation console continues, pitting the Xbox One and the PS4 against each other.

In their first meeting at E3 in Los Angeles on June 11-13, a video game showcase that exhibits upcoming games and consoles, the PS4 stole the show with its overall versatility and strong graphics.

Longtime Xbox fan senior Kip Ringsrud believes that he will buy the PS4 after its strong showing at E3.

Ringsrud said, “The PS4 looks like a stronger console. There are more features, and it even costs less. The PS4 is just more impressive than its competitors.”

The main knocks against the Xbox during E3 were that the system was not backwards compatible, meaning it could not play old games from the Xbox 360, and that the system ran in the cloud and could not operate without Internet. This proves problematic to gamers who are used to playing without Internet or have faulty connection.

While the problems seem miniscule, they lost many long time fans and made the Xbox less marketable. Critics disparaged the Xbox.

After E3’s critical stance on the One, Microsoft revamped the Xbox One and removed the cloud, which had been the primary complaint. Microsoft won back many of its fans with its adjustment, but ultimately, the PS4 is touted to be the better system. With a 64-bit operating system and many new innovations including a touch pad on the controller, it is the obvious choice for most buyers.

Sony offers the most bang for its buck with the PS4. The PS4 is set at $399 while the Xbox One is tabbed to be $559. The drastic difference in price and hardware makes the Playstation the obvious winner in the heavyweight bout between the two next-gen heavies.
