I got a dub, did you?

Remember 2018? It seems a lot longer ago than just five years. Since then, the world has changed in big — and often deeply unpleasant — ways: a global pandemic, economic downturns and seemingly extreme inflation. Things sometimes seem a little more bleak in 2023, a little less hopeful.

However, Fortnite fans recently turned back time and jumped into the good old days of 2018. For the uninformed, Fortnite is a battle royale game where 100 players “drop” onto an island full of loot and weapons where players battle each other until only one remains. Throughout the years, Fortnite has completely changed its map, adding in new weapons and locations.

The new Fortnite’s Chapter 4 Season 5, dubbed “OG” (original) by Epic Games as it was the most popular map most Fortnite fans remember and premiered in 2018.     It ran again from Nov. 3 to Dec. 3.

Like many others I was brought back to when I first started playing the game, as popular locations on the map such as “Tilted Towers,” “Pleasant Park” and “Loot Lake” remained their original 2018 look with only new upgrades to their graphic details.

Despite going back to the game’s roots, all the challenges were wildly generic and dull. It would have been really fun for the community to have “Search Between” (where players have to find hidden clues on movie billboards to complete various challenges) and “Treasure Map” challenges return. Maybe even XP Coins, which at least provided a somewhat different scavenger hunt challenge.

In the good old days, new challenges would go live every Thursday morning, and you’d see a huge surge of players online hunting them down. Epic Games should bring this back as it would bring high levels of competitiveness and fun.

Now that the retro month is over, the season is also over. While the map brought most Fortnite fans like me back to the nostalgic 2018 era, new exciting seasons with bizarre Family Guy collabs are right around the corner. umor has it that “OG” might come back again in 2024. I’m hopeful they’ll work to add new exciting challenges.
