Spring Fling week has always been a tradition that, like Homecoming, defines the school. This year, students praised Spring Fling for more attendance and participation.

To kickstart Spring Fling week, which was held before spring break, from March 28 to April 1, students attended a rally held on the Friday before to watch boys from different grades perform their hilarious and energetic powderpuff routines.

At the rally, the sophomores, juniors and seniors performed their routines, with the seniors winning for best overall.

The week was made up of all Powderpuff football games starting on Tuesday. The first game was between the freshman and junior classes, with the juniors coming out on top 12-0. On Wednesday, the sophomores played the seniors, and the seniors took home victory 12-0.

A consolation game was played on Thursday between the freshmen and sophomores; the sophomores won 12-0. Finally, during the extended lunch period on Friday, the juniors and seniors played in the championship game with the seniors winning 12-0.

Powderpuff coaches of all grades spent hours with their players preparing for the big week.

We practiced as much as we could with any girls that showed up to practice,” sophomore Powderpuff coach Will Turpin said. “We ran plays that would confuse the defense [and] open up gaps for our girls to run through. It all paid off, as we achieved our goal of not getting blown out by the seniors and destroying the freshmen.”

In addition to the traditional girl football games, the Homecoming and Spring Fling Commission set up a spirit week with the themes of Magical Monday, Time Travel Tuesday, Heroes/Villains Wednesday, Throwback to Homecoming Thursday and Oscars Friday. To encourage school-wide participation, ASB Head Commissioner Luke Salin posted graphics on the school Facebook page to help students find what to wear.

“I just wanted to give the spirit days as much publicity as possible last minute and [give ideas to people about] stuff they can use to dress up,” Salin said.

The Sadie Hawkins dance on March 26. also had great success. This year’s Sadies dance had 130 attendees, compared to last year’s 101.

“A lot of students participated in various activities such as Sadies, the dress-ups, the football games and Powderpuff,” ASB president Aakash Thumaty said. “The level of participation and enthusiasm is an indicator that the week went really well.”
