Link holds successful movie afternoon

The smell of popcorn permeated the room, and candy wrappers lay forgotten on the desks as 55 students watched eagerly as Iron Man flew across the screen in English teacher Erick Rector’s room. On Oct. 16, the LINK Crew held an “Afternoon at the Movies” for freshmen in Rector’s and Health teacher Amy Obenour’s rooms.

The original plan was to see “Star Wars,” “Enchanted,” and “Iron Man,” but “Star Wars” was cancelled because no freshmen attended that movie. Approximately 55 students (both freshmen and LINK Leaders) went to see “Iron Man,” and 30 went to see “Enchanted.”

Rector’s room was packed full. Popcorn, Capri-Suns, and various types of candy were served there. Meanwhile, “Enchanted” played in Obenour’s room. Food was served there as well.

Guidance counselor and LINK coordinator Alinna Satake, who organized the event along with guidance counselor Frances Saiki and the LINK Crew commissioners, thought it was a success.

“A lot more freshmen showed up than in past events,” said Satake.

Despite the cancellation of “Star Wars,” the movies were well received. In past LINK activities, it has been difficult to get freshmen to participate. However, this was an exception, as many students looked forward to watching movies with their friends.

“[I went to see “Iron Man”] because I like the movie, and all my friends were going and I had nothing else to do,” said Chelsea Venuti, one of the freshmen who went to the event.

Most LINK leaders said the event was a success.

“I think [the freshmen] really enjoyed it, and liked being with upperclassmen,” said LINK leader Jenna Finch, who watched “Enchanted.” “Everyone seemed to like the movie, and even the group of boys [in the ‘Enchanted’ room] seemed to have fun.”

The LINK Crew leaders believe that the success of the event will probably produce more popular LINK activities in the future.
