Saratoga High welcomes new librarian

New librarian Kevin Heyman, who is replacing the retired Tibor Szalay, hopes to inspire students to become skilled researchers and to become as passionate about research as he is.

Heyman grew up mostly in Los Angeles and earned his Bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in library science at San Jose State University. Upon graduating, he started his career as a history teacher at Mount Pleasant High School in San Jose.

After 10 years on the job, however, he decided to change his profession and become a librarian. He changed jobs because he “wanted to do something different and work with books” and teach students how to research. Heyman then worked as a librarian at Independence High School in San Jose for eight years before coming to Saratoga High.

Heyman said, “I became a librarian here because the school where I used to be a librarian cut their librarians and you guys need one. So here I am.”

Though it has only been two weeks since school started, Heyman said that he has enjoyed working here so far.

“I just look forward to helping students find the information in the books that they need to get good grades in their classes and to enjoy reading lots of good novels,” he said.
