Senior Nguyen Do is living a life many others would be jealous of: He’s done with college apps, his class schedule is relatively easy and he doesn’t have to stress out over grades the way he did earlier in high school.
That meant Do decided to look for a job.
Two weeks into the semester, Do began working at Baskin Robbins, after seeing a hire sign on the store’s window for $13.50 an hour.
He is one of several dozen seniors who have looked for and sought employment this semester as they save money for college and experience the workforce.
“When it’s busy, I serve customers, and when it’s not busy I sweep, mop and clean the windows and tables,” Do said. “It’s always fun learning how to make different items on the menu.”
Since Do works at a local business, his friends occasionally visit him. To reward their loyalty, he always treats them with his employee discount.
Do works for 10 to 15 hours each week and plans on being at the ice cream shop for the rest of the semester.
Similarly, senior Kenneth Lee decided to work at Chipotle for the rest of his semester as well as the summer. So far, he has been working for a month, and decided to join in order to experience what it was like being part of the general workforce.
“I really enjoy my job, especially because I am able to make connections and friendships with my co-workers,” Lee said.
Lee works around 20 to 25 hours each week grilling the fillings that go into burritos and burrito bowls. His friends also occasionally visit him at work. Often, they will make sure he knows that they are here and expect to take advantage of Lee’s employee discount.
