Freshman Julia Vita has been playing sports for as long as she can remember. For the past three years, she has consistently played volleyball, but lately she got an unusual amount of exposure when her photo was featured in the Winter 2013-2014 “USA volleyball magazine.”
Last summer, she attended a Nike Volleyball camp to continue working on her skills and preparing her for an upcoming season of club volleyball. The volleyball camp was held at San Jose State University, and allowed Vita to get feedback from college athletes and coaches.
Nike hired photographers to come and take pictures of the advanced camp that Vita was attending. At the beginning of the camp, all attending campers signed a consent form to Nike letting them have permission to use pictures of them in the media. This is how a the picture went published into the magazine without Vita’s knowledge. A picture of herself spiking the volleyball over the net was in the magazine went unknowingly to Vita until her friends informed her.
“I didn’t know at first, but after soccer practice, my friends all started texting me and asking if it was me,” Vita said.
Although this picture has publicized her volleyball talents, she said that this has not impacted her life in any way.
“I acted all righteous and cocky when I first heard about it but other than that not much.”
Vita’s passion for sports has led her to play a total of nine different sports in the span of her lifetime. She is currently playing soccer, volleyball, lacrosse and surfing. Sports in general are one of her favorite pastimes because she like to be active, make new friends, and show off to other on what she is able to accomplish
