More than 20 new clubs, ranging from the Harry Potter Club and Baking Club to The Social Impact and Cultural History Film Club, have surfaced with the new school year.
One of the new clubs on campus is the Harry Potter Club.
“This club originally started as simply a Harry Potter appreciation club,” said senior Julianne Wey, who founded the club along with senior Grace Ma. “But we wanted a more concrete and productive purpose, especially since Harry
Potter, contrary to some opinions, is more than a simple children’s series.”
The Harry Potter Club intends to work with several official charity organizations affiliated with Harry Potter, such as Lumos and HP Alliance.
According to Wey, the club will try to hold a “Potterbowl,” during some lunch meetings. In a “Potterbowl,” people form teams based on the four houses in Harry Potter and answer trivia questions. The Harry Potter club also hopes to hold movie showings.
Another club that plans to show films is the Cultural History Film Club.
Some examples of movies that the club plans to show are “War Horse,” “The King’s Speech” and “Blood Diamond.”
“We created this club because learning things from watching movies is easier to learn and relax,” junior Gavin Chueh said. “People always have better memorization from the movies than from textbooks.”
Additionally, sophomores Iva Glumac and Sabrina Clark have founded the Baking Club. The club plans to teach others baking techniques and hopes to hold fundraisers such as bake sales to support the Sunday Friends Foundation.
“Sabrina and I love to bake new recipes and have fun showing people what we created,” said Glumac.
Sophomore Alice He and junior Stephen Peng have founded the Social Impact Club, which aims to help small local startup businesses by promoting them and lending them money.
However, He said that fundraisers can be difficult so the club will also promote them to the community to help expand their startup business.
“Most startup businesses need a lot of money and don’t where to find it,” He said. “So that’s why The Social Impact is designed to help them, so they can become the next big Google.”
