In any given sport, it’s inevitable that injuries will occur. However, this season, the girls’ cross country team seems to be especially plagued by injuries.
“It’s the middle [of the season] where everybody just wears down,” said sophomore Courtney Schlossareck, a top runner on the team.
Scholossareck injured her knee a few weeks ago in soccer practice. She, along with a few others with major injuries, have been taking it easy. Schlossareck hopes to get back up and running soon so that she can reach her goal of qualifying for the state meet.
“Every time this year I always get hurt, but I have always recovered from it. It’s just this time of year, man. It’s cursed,” she said.
Although there have been setbacks, coach Danny Moon still says the team is stronger than ever. He thinks that the varsity team will be in “top shape” in time for CCS on Nov. 13.
The girls ran at Stanford Invitational on Sept. 25, Central Park on Sept. 28 and Crystal Springs on Oct. 7. At Central Park four people got personal records, and at Crystal Springs there were six personal records.
Moon said he is focusing on building strength and leg speed, so that the girls can qualify as a team for state. To achieve that goal, the runners have their work cut out for them.
“Our varsity team is very close to the goal line and we are currently making our final push to achieve success,” said Moon.
“I think we need to bridge the gap, because if the 4th and 5th person can move up then the team can place a lot better. The people in the middle can make up more places than the people in the front,” said Schlossareck.
A 5k at Bay Lands Park took place on Oct. 21 and then the second Lynbrook invitational be on Oct. 27.
