Unexpected winners take home Golden Globe awards

On Jan. 6, the 76th annual Golden Globes celebrated the best films and televisions shows of 2018. Hosting the ceremony was former “Grey’s Anatomy” and current “Killing Eve” actress Sandra Oh, paired with “Brooklyn 99” actor and “Saturday Night Live” sketch comic Andy Samberg.

Many felt that this was an odd pairing because the two had such different presentation styles, with Samberg making jokes about “Roma” and “Crazy Rich Asians” showing his comedic side, while Oh was more serious and emotional. To commence the ceremony, Oh gave an powerful speech about becoming the first Asian American actor to host the Golden Globes and the importance of Asian representation in the entertainment industry.

Best Motion Picture: Drama

Winner: “Bohemian Rhapsody”

“Bohemian Rhapsody” beat out four other nominees: “Black Panther,” “A Star is Born,”  “BlacKkKlansman” and “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Additionally, “Bohemian Rhapsody” actor Rami Malek took home best performance by an actor in a Motion Picture-Drama while Glenn Close of “The Wife” won Best Performance by an actress in a Motion Picture-Drama.

Many fans of Marvel’s “Black Panther” were angry that although the film was nominated for three Golden Globes (Best Motion Picture- Drama, Best Original Song, Original Score), it did not win a single one.

Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy

Winner: “Green Book”

Many were confused about how “Green Book” beat out nominations such as “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Mary Poppins” for Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy. “Crazy Rich Asians” earned $235 million and becoming the highest grossing romantic comedy in a decade as well as the sixth-highest grossing movie ever, yet still lost to “Green Book,” which grossed $60.6 million and only made it to sixth in the box office.

Additionally, actress Olivia Colman from “The Favourite” and “Vice” actor Christian Bale respectively won Best Performances by an Actress and Actor in a Motion Picture Film-Musical  or Comedy.

Best Original Song- Motion Picture

Winner: “Shallow” from “A Star is Born”

One win that was unsurprising was Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s song “Shallow” from the film “A Star is Born.” The song is about the two main characters’ conversations in “A Star is Born” and represents a turning point in their relationship.  “Shallow” debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard Digital Songs Chart when released and has been streamed about 150 million times.

Best Motion Picture-Animated

Winner: “Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse”

Shockingly, after being released only 23 days before the Golden Globes, “Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse” won the category over “Isle of Dogs,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Incredibles 2.”. Although the movie received some hesitation to it being the first animated Spiderman movie, it has received a positive response from many viewers and critics.
