Letter to the Editor: Football team thanks fans

October 28, 2010 — by Peter Auvil and the rest of the Saratoga Falcons

Twenty-eight teams; teams with the same focus, discipline, and commitment to the cause. Twenty-eight took the field in search of victory. Twenty-eight teams held their heads high, knowing that they had tried their best; knowing that there is no shame in failure. That there is only shame in failing to try.

Twenty-eight teams; teams with the same focus, discipline, and commitment to the cause. Twenty-eight took the field in search of victory. Twenty-eight teams held their heads high, knowing that they had tried their best; knowing that there is no shame in failure. That there is only shame in failing to try.

We built on their endeavors to try our hand at victory, and fortune favored us this time. We ended the streak. But the victory was not for our team alone; it was for the school; the community; and for all those who had tried before. We alone usually stand on Benny Pierce field after a hard-earned victory, but it was not so this night. After we beat Los Gatos, the school stormed the field to celebrate. A celebration of school spirit beyond words.

That’s why we do it. That’s why we train throughout the year, while everyone else takes pause. That’s why we meet before dawn on Wednesdays, while everyone else sleeps late. That’s why we let defeat be our welcome teacher, while everyone else points to the humbling score. That’s why we gladly carry the burden of a daunting rivalry, while everyone else weighs the cause as lost.

In life, we count ourselves lucky to have a few moments that will stay with us for a lifetime. We hope that each of you will one day have the opportunity to experience the exhilaration that comes from success, success against all odds, built on a foundation of extraordinary commitment, sacrifice, and above all – teamwork; just as we did, one memorable Friday evening this late October.

“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.” We defeated the Los Gatos Wildcats. Not one of us will ever forget that night. Thank you for supporting us; thanks to all of you who shared in the moment.
