Girls’ track: Despite lack of coaches, freshmen strengthen team

February 2, 2017 — by Caitlin Ju and Ami Nachiappan

The girls' track team is improved through the addition of new star freshmen players, regardless of the lack of coaches.

Coach: Archie Ljepava

League: Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, El Camino Division

Key Athletes: Senior sprinter Celine Bellegarda, junior hurdlers Riley Carter and Chloe McGhee and junior thrower Paige Hansen

Key Additions: freshman distance runner Julia Hoffman

Key Losses: Alumna Kimberly Chen

Key Matchups: Wilcox, Monta Vista

Prognosis:

As of the end of January, the team has yet to find coaches for both long distance and sprinting. McGhee anticipates, though,  that strong new runners such as Hoffman will add to the team’s strength.

“It’s going to be a different coaching dynamic, but there’s going to be a lot of new freshmen who are strong,” McGhee said. “I expect distance is going to improve, as well as sprints.”
