Girls’ golf: Team optimistic with new additions and added experience

September 25, 2018 — by Kevin Sze

After the Sept. 10 match against Monta Vista, the girls’ golf team crowded around a golf cart to celebrate their dominant 209-241 victory with a team photo.

Senior captain Janelle Jin led the Falcons with an even par 34 for nine holes and fellow senior Kristin Murakami bounced back from an out of bounds ball on the first hole to shoot a 40.

Though golf is more of an individual sport than many others, Jin said a strong team unity is important.

“I’m hoping that we will score better than last year and make it to league finals and possibly CCS as a team this year,” Jin said. “I think we have improved a lot in terms of acting as a team; in my freshman year, the traveling members weren’t as close to the non-traveling members, but now, I think our team as a whole seems more tight knit and like a family.”

Junior Sally Kim feels that even the competition has driven all of the players to a different level.

“We’re always playing against each other,” she said. “We want to beat each other and it’s made all of us work harder, which translates to better scores in competition.”

Coach Dave Gragnola sees plenty of potential in his team this year. With new and experienced competitive golfers, the team is ready to make a run at leagues and CCS.

Gragnola said, “The whole team is playing with great energy and poise. Janelle is playing at an impressively high level and is currently the number one player in the league.”

On Sept. 17, the Falcons played a home match against Gunn and barely lost 225-227, bringing their league record to 1-1.

According to Gragnola, the team made to many mental errors and course management errors, ultimately resulting in higher scores than the Falcons could have shot.

Their next match will be on Oct. 1 against Los Gatos at home.

Due to printing deadlines, the Falcon was unable to cover the Sept. 25 match at Lynbrook and the Sept. 27 match at Monta Vista.
