Class of 2018 makes the most out of last Powder Puff season

March 22, 2018 — by Amy Tang

Seniors begin preparation for last Powder Puff competition.

“Are you ready for, ready for / A perfect storm, a perfect storm.” The Katy Perry hit echoed through the dance studio as senior Powder Puff choreographers Nicholas Di and Nathan Kang prepare a group of boys for their Powder Puff dance and cheer performance on at the rally on March 30.

This year, the Powder Puff rally will take place the day before the Spring Fling dance, and football games will be played from April 2-6.

This year, aside from Di and Kang, who are both members of the boys’ dance team, many others, with varying dancing experience, have signed up to perform, including  Pranav Ahuja, Nathon Chin, Aaron Choi, Stephen Ding, Nguyen Do, Amith Galivanche, Aayush Gupta, Ian Kim, Jay Kim, Ryan Kim, Prashant Malyala, Vishal Narayan, Nick Phan, Sahm Rafati, Anirudh Rao, Connor Reyes, Roland Shen, Navin Tiwary, Alex Vaziri, Varun Viswanath, Kyle Wang, Tristan Xiao and Atlas Yuen.

Many of those who have signed up have performed in Powder Puff before. Yuen, for example, has participated in Powder Puff for his entire high school career, and is particularly excited for their grand finale.

“It’s going to be extremely hype,” Yuen said. “Last year was good but this year is going to be better.”

Another seasoned Powder Puff participant, Viswanath, said that Powder puff is the boys’ time to express themselves and have fun.

The boys plan to begin practicing on the week of March  19, and will practice every day during tutorials and lunches starting on March 26.

Senior Harrison Fong is coaching the girls this year, and admits that though Powder Puff preparations are currently going slow, they aim to change offensive positions from previous years. At future practices, he plans to run different position drills and work on full offensive and defensive practice with the players.

Class of 2018 players include Surya Murthy, Kate Bossi, Sadhana Vadrevu, Allison Borch, Caroline Chen, Chloe Fung, Tiffany Vu, Chloe McGhee, Harshini Ramaswamy, Jacqueline Schwartz, Riley Carter, Hannah Fan, Ishana Thanawala, Miranda Song, Chancee Gaskin, Colina Guan, Maya Gupta, and Siobhan Burgos.

Vadrevu, who has participated in the Powder Puff games for all four years of high school, eagerly anticipates playing for one last time.

“It’s fun to play with my friends and the competition between grades is always something to look forward to. We’re going to make some great memories as seniors,” Vadrevu said.
