Chess team solidifies county dominance

Queen to F-4. Checkmate.

Saratoga High's top ranked chess team dominated the competition at the 2010 Santa Clara County High School Chess Championship held at Monta Vista High School on Feb. 6.

The team took home four of the top five place trophies and once again solidified itself as a county chess powerhouse.

Monta Vista had won the a league tournament two months ago, but this time around, the Saratoga tandem of senior Charles Sun and sophomore Evan Ye proved to be too much. They placed first and second, respectively.

Freshman Kevin Garbe took home the fourth place trophy.

“We were just better than them,” said sophomore Brian Wai, who finished in fifth place.

The team now looks forward to the Denker Qualifier in March and the CalChess Scholastics in April where they hope to capture a record-setting sixth consecutive state championship.
