You did what back in high school?
Benzing Megan 11 103284"
February 10, 2011 — by Megan Benzing

“You know, back when I went to Saratoga…”, “During my childhood here…”, “I never had to deal with…”. These are all the typical conversation starters for each time I get told about how high school was so different back in the ‘70s. And I don’t just get this from one parent, I get it from both. Yep, that’s right. Both of my parents went to Saratoga High for high school.

Baseball: More than a game
February 5, 2011 — by Roy Bisht

January 31. For many students, this is just a regular dreadful Monday morning, but for me, it is the beginning of baseball season.

Banksy: The brilliant and enigmatic hit-and-run graffiti guru
Galivanche Anoop 11 103356"
January 16, 2011 — by Anoop Galivanche

I had felt very avant garde the day I e-mailed Banksy, the graffiti artist who became an underground cult figure through his work in major metropoli and politically controversial areas. Droves of errant teenagers treat his anarchist graffitis more like shrines of congregation than vandalized walls.

Wildcats vs. Falcons under the same roof
Ju Alexandra 11 103397"
January 12, 2011 — by Alex Ju

My brother is a freshman in high school this year. Chances are, however, that you haven’t seen him wandering around campus.

Though my brother went to Redwood Middle School, he now attends Los Gatos High School. This strikes a number of people as odd. Why have two siblings attend two different schools?

Following my brother’s footsteps isn’t as easy as it seems
January 7, 2011 — by Michelle Shu

After graduating from Saratoga High in 2008, my older brother Marvin went on to become a student at Stanford University. I have constantly dreamed of boasting admittance to Stanford, but my brother’s accomplishments are difficult to match.

Fish out of water: swimmer switches from pool to pitch
December 15, 2010 — by Tim Rollinson

Since freshman year my niche has been the pool. I have long been defined as an aquatic creature and my athletic career has (until this point) been contained within the lane lines and the water polo cage.

This reputation is likely the reason it seemed like so many people were staring at me when I showed up for soccer tryouts or it may have been the baby blue socks that had clearly become obsolete since my days as a youth on the soccer field. The question accompanying the stares: “You play soccer?”
The best response I could muster was, “It’s been a while.”

Starbucks: by any other name would not smell as sweet
December 15, 2010 — by Samika Kumar

Starbucks. It’s my best friend. A visit to Starbucks changes my day from average to spectacular for two reasons: the steaming, sweet chai tea latte I order every time I visit and the vast majority of names I can pick from when the person at the register asks for my name.

Super mom inspires senior
Sharma Apeksha 12 102550"
December 15, 2010 — by Apeksha Sharma

As I surround myself with the various college applications, one question seems to appear on every one.

Who inspires you the most?

My first thought is Batman, with that catchy jingle and amazing batmobile. However, upon further contemplation I have reached my final conclusion, my mom.

Before you call me out on how cliché my response is, take a moment to see why exactly my mom can be credited with such an honor.

The Christmas tree hunt
Williams Emily 11 103565"
December 15, 2010 — by Emily Williams

The Christmas tree—a pagan tradition ingrained in a Christian holiday. Perhaps it is a sign of the commercialization of Christmas along with Santa Claus and Frosty the Snowman. However, a Christmas tree is a sacred holiday tradition that should not be taken lightly.

The Rhodes we take: His sister reveals a different side of Varun Sivaram
uttara_0"
December 8, 2010 — by Uttara Sivaram

It’s funny—I’ve spent these past three years trying to ignore the legacy that my brother, Varun Sivaram, left behind. I’ve gone to great lengths to make my own path and pioneer my own route to success, carefully avoiding all the activities he partook in (which, I assure you, did not leave many options).
