Editor’s Note: Minor spoilers for “Suits.”
I’m a sucker for a good legal drama, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that one of my favorite TV shows of all time is “Suits.” After its run on USA Network from 2011-19, the show was finally added to Netflix in 2023, which is when I found it.
“Suits” follows the life of a college dropout named Mike Ross, played by Patrick J. Adams. Ross is blessed with a photographic memory, but he enters the legal profession through — at best — dubious means.
While in the midst of a drug deal, Mike attempts to evade the cops and finds himself in an interview room for law firm associates. There, Harvey Specter, played by Gabriel Macht, sees Mike’s potential talent offers him a chance at being a lawyer, but with an ultimatum — he must pretend that he went to Harvard Law School, since the firm hires only Harvard Law graduates.
From there, the show cleverly plays off of the chemistry between Mike and Harvey through various legal situations. Throughout the show, there’s always the suspense that Mike may be caught for being a fraud, which makes the show extremely compelling. Mike also finds the love of his life, Rachel, played by Megan Markle (now famous as a member of the British royal family), when working at the law firm during the first season. Meanwhile, Harvey expands his relationships with hit characters such as Louis Litt, played by Rick Hoffman, and Donna, played by Sarah Rafferty.
Unfortunately, despite my love for the show’s early seasons, it’s clear that “Suits” begins to lose its edge after Season 5. It dragged on for another two seasons before Adams exited the series in the Season 7 finale, reportedly due to struggles with alcoholism, and Markle also made her departure to begin her new life with Prince Harry. Once Adams left, the show struggled to fill the void. Starting Season 8, the original tension that kept things interesting fades, and what’s left feels like a drawn-out version of what it once was.
The last two seasons attempt to shift focus onto other characters, but the result is a series that feels forced. Louis, while entertaining, takes on more screen time in ways that often border on exaggerated caricature rather than character growth, which becomes extremely irritating as he continues to repeat past mistakes.
Donna and Harvey remain at a stalemate with their relationship until the very last episodes. New characters such as Samantha Wheeler and Alex Williams don’t click with the existing ensemble. “Suits” begins to rely more on recycled plotlines and unnecessary drama, making the final stretch painful to watch. Just as how Harvey overthrew Jessica to become managing partner, Louis does the same only about two seasons later. The journey of Samantha and Alex mirrors Mike’s journey early on, making their stories repetitive and boring.
Personally, I believe that the series should’ve ended when Mike is caught for being a fraud at the end of Season 5. Not every story needs a happy ending, and Mike’s secret is the pinnacle of the entire storyline. Viewers had been waiting for the moment where his secret comes out for years, and it delivered a satisfying payoff that felt like a natural ending. Without the dramatic tension over whether his secret will come out, “Suits” isn’t “Suits.” Dragging the story out beyond that point just to force a happy ending felt unnecessary.
Like many shows before it, “Suits” serves as a cautionary tale: Sometimes it’s better to end shortly after a story’s true climax rather than dragging the series on and risking tarnishing what made the show special in the first place.

I disagree. Not completely though. For me, when Mike and Rachel both left, that should’ve been the end. For me, they were truly the centre of the show. I’m trying to like suits LA. The jury is still out, for me

I’m just in the process of watching this series. Nearly finished, and I couldn’t agree more with this commentary. An awful lot of rinse and repeat in the last four seasons.

I couldn’t agree more. To be honest after season 4, it began to lose its luster. However you loved the show so much you stayed on board regardless.

Thank you for your feedback. When an audience falls in love with the characters, they are like family members and just want to ride the storms when the sun is shining and the storm clouds. I thank Suits for giving us happy endings. In times like these we need happy endings. Suits provided this and their final 10 minutes of season 9 was exceptional. Thanks again!

I think being able to binge watch on Netflix added to the shows popularity and the two main characters made the show. Without them or Netflix viewing it’s going to be difficult to sell possibly.

Okay let just hold on.Suits is one of the Greatest TV Series of all time, The creating of these two characters Micheal Ross which is gifted with photographic memory , and a “Legal Prodigy”with the best Attorney in New York Harvey Specter. This added one of the most Iconic storyline of A Prodigy and Master working together and having to grow a deep bond with each other despite of Micheal not having a Legal License.
And the characters like Jessica Pearson, Louis Litt & Dana Paulsen and very good dynamic relationships in this show as everyone played there character at there best. When Harvey Specter has a rivalry in the work place with Louis Litt and Jessica Pearson acts as mentor to both of them and Dana Paulsen as the wise, sassy and empathetic were everyone comes for advice to them and all of the along the way the best thing about Suit is despite all there different they were really character development along the and everyonewas growing in there own way especially louis litt who grew a better relationship with others colleagues and made mends with harvey alongthe way ” of was one of my favorite things along the way in Suits.
The Season Finale, Season 9,Episode 16 had a very powerful and highly emotional ending where everyone got what they wanted and Harvey Specter leaving” Pearson Specter Litt ” or “Litt Wheeler Williams Bennett ” really made us emotional and Harvey being together with Dana and marrying her really made us wonder where are there lives after final episode and I still want to know more what is about what happening with there lives .
All in All “Suits” is the best legal drama I have ever watched in my entire life I’ve watched some other legal dramas like “Law &Order , How to get away with murder , Anatomy of a Scandal , The Lincoln Lawyer &Reasonable doubt And I have to say there good ,but none of them come close to Suits. Suits is the best and always will be the best legal drama series of all time.
“Maybe it’s downfall would be that they have created ” Suits LA” I’ve seen some of the episodes they released and I’m truly not impressed but who knows maybe I’m judging to early or not ,but I don’t see me having a future with Suits LA.
