As the school year begins, the 2009-2010 spirit commission is looking to bolster school pride along with a little competition.

In addition to the institution of frequent spirit days, the commission is planning to “bring back the class competition by giving points to those who dress up for their class,” said junior head commissioner Shir Nehama.

Awards will be given out to those who are the most spirited throughout the whole school.

“The title of Spirit King and Queen will be granted to the people who dress up the most and bring the most spirit,” said Nehama. “The King and Queen will also give their respective classes bonus points for the competition.”

The commission will be teaming up with the members of the “Thursday” group to ignite school spirit.

“The ‘Thursday’ group is a team of upperclassmen who started dressing up every Thursday with different themes,” said Nehama. “’We will be working with them to get the whole school involved, but no class points will be awarded on those days.”

The next spirit day is a Nerd Day and will be held Oct. 2. It will also mark the beginning of the class competitions. The day also will include music at lunch, prizes and an overall nerdy atmosphere, according to Nehama.

The spirt commission is also planning a celebration of the school 50th anniversary for the Friday following the spirit day.

“There will be ’50s style dress up and music to bring back the memories,” said Nehama.

The spirit commission is looking forward to the upcoming events to bring some friendly competition to the school in hopes of raising school spirit throughout the year.
