Swim teams hopeful after disappointing season

February 5, 2016 — by Pranav Ahuja and Emily Chen

Recap and plans for boys and girls swim teams.

Girls

Coach: Kristen Thomson

Last year record: 1-5

2015 Season Recap: Six girls went to CCS as individual swimmers, and four girls went as relay-only swimmers.

Star Athletes: juniors Stefanie Ting, Anna Zhou, Jane Oberhauser; sophomores Jeanette Khowong, Colina Guan

Key Additions: freshmen Lei Otsuka, Ashley Feng

Key Losses to Graduation: Yayla Sezginer

League: De Anza League

Prognosis: This season, the team looks to take advantage of having more swimmers on the team, going from having 13 members last year to around 15 this year. “I’m hoping that we don’t lose all of our dual meets because our main reputation is that our swim team is bad even though we have a lot of talented swimmers,” said junior Anna Zhou.

Boys

Coach: Christian Bonner

Last year record: 1-5

2015 Season Recap: “Last season I think was a little bit of a rough season. One of our best swimmers [senior Jack Xie] actually injured himself for the first few meets, and he’s really fast, so we definitely had a bit of trouble in the beginning. We went 1 win and 5 losses. It wasn’t too great,” senior Harrison Yang said.

Star Athletes: seniors Jack Xie, Harrison Yang, Rahul Cheeniyil, Jonathan Fung; junior Nathan Ching

Key Additions: freshman Lei Otsuka, Ashley Feng

Key Losses to Graduation: Andre Baluni, Winston Vo

League: De Anza League

Prognosis: “This year we’re just trying to hopefully stay healthy so we can do our best at all our meets and try to have a better season than last year,” Yang said.
